Alpaca

Lama guanicoë pacos

Alpacas belong to the New World camelids (domestic camels), like vicugnas, lamas and guanacos.

The domestication of alpacas began 5000 years ago, particularly because of their wool. For the Incas an alpaca coat was a sign of wealth.

In South America the foals are called “Crias”, the mares “Hembras” and the stallions “Machos”. These names come from the spanish language.

Alpacas are shorn once a year. Each shearing brings 3 – 6 kg wool.
