Dybowski Sika Deer

Cervus nippon

The Sika deer are represented by the Dybowski deer, the largest subspecies. Their antlers are weaker than those of the red deer, without shovel formation and slightly branched. The summer coat shows strong spots on a chestnut-brown ground and clearly visible, dark eel line on the back; in winter dark brown coat. The spots are hardly visible. A white spot below the hocks on the hind legs serves as a unique characteristic.

Sika deer damage the forest by peeling the tree bark (in contrast to red deer and roe deer – biting of young plants).

The Sika deere is active day and night and very undemanding.
