Yak

Bos mutus

The yak is a relatively close relative of the aurochs. Because of its frugality and insensitivity to cold, Hausyak is kept in large parts of Asia, especially at higher altitudes. Yak manure is often the only fuel in the treeless and rugged plateaus of Tibet.

Yak hybrid with domestic cattle or zebus give better meat and more milk. However, the male crossbreeds of yak and cattle are said to be infertile.

The way of life of the wild yak is largely unknown. They are cultural refugees and generally endangered. Only small remainders have survived in some areas.
