European pine marten

Martes martes

Its fur used to be much more coveted than that of a stone marten, they called him “noble marten”. He climbs very well and can jump up to 4 meters. The 16 – 28 cm long and bushy tail and serves as an organ of balance while climbing and jumping. Compared to the stone marten, tree martens are pretty human shy.

Distinguishing marks to the stone marten:

The throat spot is light yellow to yellow, while the stone martens is white. Its fur is splendidly reddish-brown, different to the stone martens which is brown. The snout is darker colored than the remaining fur, the stone martens is a little bit lighter. The noble marten is slimmer and long-legged compared to the stone marten.
